Become a Member

How can I become a member?

Call at any of our offices and complete an application form. There is a one off joining fee of £5 for those in employment and £2 for others. You must provide proof of identity such as a passport, driving licence, or benefit book, and also proof of home address such as a recent bill, letter, or bank statement.

Membership is free for children and young people under the age of 18, but they can only save with the Credit Union up to a limit of £5000 and cannot take out loans, stand for election, or vote at meetings.

Joint Accounts

Two members can hold a joint account, either to build up savings or to take out a loan. The credit union may require two people to take out a joint loan if it is based on joint incomes, or is where a large loan is required for a joint purpose such as a wedding.

Is my money safe?

The Credit Union Committee is required by law to take out insurance to protect the Credit Union’s funds against all losses, costs and expenses incurred as a result of mismanagement, fraud or dishonesty committed by committee members or employees.

The Credit Union's members are also covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which protects all savings up to £2000 and 90% of all savings up to a further £31,000, if a credit union closes down.

The Credit Union's accounts are audited each year by an independent auditor and quarterly financial reports have to be sent to the Financial Services Authority, which monitors and regulates credit unions.

The Credit Union has to comply with regulations relating to the prevention of money laundering.
